The BHU became a Charitable Trust in 2001 and is a joint venture between Lincoln University and the New Zealand Organic Movement.

The Trust’s primary purpose is the protection and management of the BHU for which it is solely responsible. The Trust also has a range of charitable aims including providing education, training and research in organic, ecological, permanent and related agricultures and horticultures.
